Maas villa

Prosperity, Connection, Safety and Recreation are some words that are central to both the mayor of Rotterdam as the river Nieuwe Maas. A physical connection between these two drivers of the city is inevitable.

Prosperity, Connection, Safety and Recreation are some words that have meaning to both the mayor of Rotterdam as the river Nieuwe Maas. A physical connection between these two drivers of the city is inevitable.

The chosen location shows the possibility of placing the mayoral residence within the borders of the port of Rotterdam. Due to the planned transformation of the port area, Katendrecht will become a more central point for Rotterdam. The placement in the Tube Park mayoral given a strong visual connection to his city, and strengthens Katendrecht position in future developments.

Rotterdam characterizes itself by its strongly pronounced vertical architecture, the Erasmus Bridge, Nationale Nederlanden and Montevideo are some icons. By using this verticality and to put plans to create a building that is characterized by being part of the port area and not try to outdo the importance of his surroundings. The building allows for a more intimate connection with the city by far to stabbing the water and provide insight into the ports and buildings from water level.

The property is divided into two layers; private and public. Both functions can be entered by boat and by car. To use the private part of the house, the mayor has a separate entrance with parking. He enters the house on the bottom layer in order to merge with the private area.

By partialy placing the house on land and on the water, it is possible to use both for cooling and heating of the building. There will be enough storagecapacity in the ground for warm and cold water plus there is the possibility to use the Maas river to heat and cool the house.

Only when the water of the Maas is colder than in the house, it is switched to this underground source of water stored in the soil. Heating with fossil fuel is not needed, and no CO2 emissions are generated through this heatingsystem.
